PROJECT BARISTA CONNECT
As our community grows rapidly with the establishment of new neighbourhoods, it would be easy to think that our strong sense of community and belonging might be lost.
It is wonderful to say that has not been the case, our community remains a strong beacon of hope. This was proven during recent disasters like COVID-19 and floods, where people stepped up to support those in difficult circumstances. The level of generosity and giving has been truly remarkable.
This spirit of giving and creating opportunities extends across many community initiatives. A great example is a new collaboration between the Community Foundation of North Western Sydney and community organisations & local businesses. Together, we work to deliver programs, services, and pathways that uplift those in need.
This exciting initiative “Project Barista Connect”, aimed at providing employment pathways for vulnerable young people offers a journey that includes tailored support, certificate and industry-specific training, mentoring, work experience, and, most importantly, a pathway into paid employment within the hospitality industry. The project also includes a mobile coffee van that can be booked for events providing participants with real-world experience.
With Blacktown City forecast to reach a population of 649,961 by 2041 and likely sooner, given rapid growth, the need for workforce development is pressing. The North West precinct alone now comprises 20 suburbs. The workforce participation rate in Blacktown is 62.8%, while youth disengagement among 15–24-year-olds stands at 10.9%.
At the same time, we often hear from the business community that it is increasingly difficult to find reliable staff. This combination of factors inspired this collaborative initiative, a solution that meets both the needs of local young people and businesses. “Project Barista Connect” builds skills, provides targeted support, and empowers participants, enhancing their chances of securing employment while supplying local businesses with a trained, ready-to-work talent pool.
A true win for our region, we are building a stronger community together.
